As always, I'd like to point out that the following points are my personal opinion. If you disagree or would like to know more, etc, please contact me or leave a reply in this topic. 1. RP'ing in the past tense, or with would at the start of every sentence. Of course, everyone should RP the way they want to, but somehow this doesn’t sit right with me. If you RP in the past tense, it implies that your character’s actions have already happened. This doesn’t add up, seeing as when you write them, the action happens at that very moment. In the “here and now.” As for the term Would, to me this word isn’t wrong, but using it too often just doesn’t… work. Here’s an example of how people ‘abuse’ the word would at times. “He would sit down. he would then eat an apple. He would smile at people. He would wave at *name*.” 2. Being so focused on your own character that you pretend other people’s actions do not take place. For instance, a friend of mine had her child-character attacked in the middle of the cathedral square. A few people came and helped, others watched and spoke of their outrage, but I saw how two people, standing practically near the victim, just pretended nothing happened. Be careful, please, not to let your possible ideas and plans for your RP get in the way of creativity and spontaneous contact.
I see this a lot, to my surprise. Of course, you can dislike a race. But I really press, don’t just plain ignore their RP at all. You can say your character wants nothing to do with them, but don’t blank them out. Same goes for lower-aged characters. I have met people who play children really well. A child character can be just as easy or difficult to RP as a grown person. And ignoring them for not being old enough is silly, since children are a part of life and it’s my opinion, that they belong there as much as anyone. If we can accept the presence of death knights, then children shouldn’t be ignored. 4. Don’t take IC matters OOC. If a character is rude to you, it may well feel uncomfortable, but most of the time, it is the character just being grumpy, rude or in a plain bad mood. Some people have a character that is obnoxious or unpleasant, possibly even racist or sexist. But don’t pick a fight OOC. It may only cause unpleasantness and that won’t help make RP fun! If someone is being rude IC and you feel uncomfortable, walk away or do what I do. Whisper that person OOC and make it into a joke of sorts. For instance: Wowrpnerd whispers to *name*: ((Aww now you made my charcter sad. 5. Don’t ignore someone’s actions or pretend to DC. If your character gets assaulted, please don’t ignore their every move. Claiming to have a DC won’t help either. You’ll only get a bad name if it happens often, and that’s no good. Of course, if you truly DC or miss someone’s movements, that can happen. But knowingly ignoring is, alas, a bad way to sell yourself as an RP'er. 6. Remember the lore. I do not ask you to follow it to the letter. Everyone bends. But as I mentioned before, try not to bend it too far, since we don’t want it to snap. Some people may find that the lightest of changes and bending in RP is wrong, but we have to remain creative, of course! Just, a death knight with the ability to shapeshift into dead animals, doesn’t fit, as far as I know. If you can find good reason to counter this, do tell! | |
