Before I start off, I want to add that this is MY personal view on things. You are not necessarily doing things wrong if you do it different, but I believe that the things below can cause some confusion.

Lets talk you through a few common and less common mistakes in RP, some easy to spot, others a little more.. nerdy.

The most important thing to start with is not to walk up to people you do not know IC (in character) and call them by their name. Especially if their RP addon hasn’t loaded yet. Their name may be different IC from their character’s name. “Hello Blöodredeyez, I like your hair!”

So, don’t pretend to know people’s names, characteristics, anything, *unless it can be easily seen. A worgen walking around in human form, will not be recognized as a worgen at first, even if they might smell of wet dog. You may –suspect-, but you cannot simply Know.

So if you met someone in their Worgen form, seeing them a next time in human form, you will not instantly recognise them.

Always use /*emote* or /e *emote* for whatever you want your character to DO, rather than say. Some people use Say: “I’m sorry, *grins* I never saw you there.” This is not wrong, but it’s not as clear as using /e to write out your actions.

Don’t write your emotes in past tense or with Would. Things happen in the here and now. [/e] Doris would go to the bar and order a drink.

And a very important one:

Never act out towards another player without giving them a chance to counter. For example:

*Bobby swings out and hits *player* square in the face, knocking him out.*

This emote is wrong. Because Bobby, in this case, doesn’t give the player a chance to respond. The right way would be:

*Bobby swings out and tries to hit *player* in the face, hoping to knock him out.*

Here, you give the player the chance to respond, without controlling the player’s character for them. If you do this wrong, it is called Godemoting.

Aside from that, don’t make your character too perfect. No one never gets hurt, is so pretty and kind and sweet and loved the whole world will drop at their feet. No one never does things wrong. So give your characters their strengths and flaws, like any normal person has.

A perfect character is called a Mary Sue.

Did I forget anything? Are there things you disagree with? Do respond!
