There are, without a doubt, a gazillion guides that explain roleplaying. I am far from the funniest, the quickest, the most popular. Nor is my roleplaying perfect, I just enjoy it and I hope that I can somehow teach someone, as much as it’ll help me improve by writing this.

I hope that someday, someone will say that I helped their roleplaying skills along, even if it’s only a 0.01% improvement.

The very first time I came to Argent Dawn (AD) for RP, I walked straight into Goldshire, which is also known as “Pornshire” by most of the AD population. It is a haven for ERP’ers and if you want to test your erotic roleplaying skills, that might be an interesting place to go.

If you tell people that you are new to RP, they may tell you to go to Goldshire. Sometimes they say it to people they consider to be “bad” Rp’ers as well, as the RP standard of Goldshire, overall, are a little lower. However, if you don’t want to be approached for sexual encounters, I recommend you come to Stormwind instead.

First step. Orientate yourself with the type of character you want to play. Start with the race. I personally play and therefore focus on the characters of the Alliance.

I have learned, through trial and error, that although other, more foreign races are more intriguing, the human is the easiest character to learn to RP on. And they are actually quite fun! Try to avoid becoming a family member to a lore character, as people will not take you seriously.

Simply put, a simple background for a “simple” character is going to make getting used to RP a lot easier, in my experience.

“I have lived in Duskwood my whole life, but I wanted a change of scenery, so I decided to come to Stormwind.”

If you want slightly more, a Worgen character, a gnome or a dwarf is also quite close to home. Though dwarves are known for their heavy accents; you’ll possibly want to look into addons for this.

The reason I have yet to mention Draenei, Pandaren and Night Elves, as well as any in-between races you may have encountered, is because they take a lot more reading into than other races. You’ll need to know your lore through and through. Naturally, knowing lore will help with any race, but a glance-over should be enough to get you started with a human, gnome, dwarf or worgen.

You will find separate topics on Death Knights and Demon Hunters, as they are special cupcakes.

Naming characters is fun, but if you find yourself at a loss, [this website] may be of a little help.

I do recommend a little bit of leveling before you RP. I know it’s a bore, but you will find people more accepting if you have a few levels behind your name. Plus, you will have more gear choices!
